The World Uses a Variety of Different Energy Sources

The world relies on a variety of energy sources. In 2018, fossil fuels, such as oil, gas and coal, accounted for more than 81 percent energy consumed. Renewable energy sources such as solar energy, wind power biomass, hydroelectricity, and biomass comprise 14 percent. Nuclear energy accounts for another 5percent. Different countries have various energy sources, balancing the environmental aspects with economics.

Nature provides energy in a number of forms: sunlight, wind, waves, ocean and many more. These sources of energy are transformed into more convenient energy forms, such as electricity or heat, once they are harnessed. These energy sources become non-renewable sources of energy once they have been exhausted.

A lot of fossil fuels and a few of the other energy sources that are not renewable are causing harm to the environment. For example, mining for oil can strip the planet’s pristine forests. Fracking (hydraulic fracturing) can cause earthquakes and water pollution. The burning of coal releases carbon dioxide, contributing to global warming.

Fortunately that many of the most promising sources of energy are renewable and sustainable. Hydropower, solar energy and wind power, for instance, can produce electricity without the need to search for new resources.

Tidal and Wave Power are the other renewable energy sources that are gaining popularity. To be utilized on large scale, these sources of energy require effective distribution networks. These must be built and operate with the use of non-renewable energy. These sources aren’t able to satisfy the majority of our energy needs. It’s important to remember that the prices of renewable energy equipment has fallen dramatically in recent years and the efficiency is rising.
